Remediation at Olasfa-site Olst
Remediation of a special project at site of former asphalt factory in Olst.
Because of a supplementary investigation last year the remediation of the Olasfa-site in Olst was postponed. After clarity the remediation was started in spring 2006. Meanwhile the remediation activities are almost finished.
History:
Seventy years ago an asphalt factory was located on a site in Olst near the river IJssel. Because of the former activities contaminated soil and groundwater were arise. After the summer of 2005 SITA Remediation was invited by the purchaser to be present at the meeting for inhabitants. Then preparation works were started to remove the most contaminated layer. Just at that moment there was a discussion about soil and mud related to the proposed assimilations location. With as a consequence that further remediation activities were postponed till getting clarity.
Remediation activities:
Looking through the window of the office near the remediation site various activities are visible. During the visit of our reporter material and personnel are busy at the whole site. In the middle of the site floors and foundations are demolished, near the river at the end of the site contaminated soil is excavated between sheet piles and vehicles are driving continuous over a temporary bridge to load ships. The ships with contaminated soil are sailing to Botlek-Rotterdam for thermal desorption. Besides deposits are organized, soil sifted and trucks loaded with rubble for assimilation elsewhere. Also because of the direction of the wind and the chance on stench inconvenience this project is a logistic challenge.
Another important item is the excavation, transportation and assimilation of a former barrel dump with all necessary safety aspects. The barrels, which are found, contain a high concentration of mercury, through which a specific assimilation site was needed to accept these barrels. In the summary is noticed that this remediation project is sizable, alternately and specific because of the former barrel dump.
Development:
The Olasfa-site (and his surrounding) has to be developed with the following subjects: new nature area, recreational area, more safety at high water level and remediation of industrial site.
