Major project in Chesterfield

SITA Remediation is almost ready building a thermal desorption plant in Chesterfield.

Joint Venture VSD Avenue, formed by Volker Stevin (UK), SITA Remediation (NL) and DEME Environmental Contractors (B), is qualified as the best contactor for the major project "The Avenue" in Chesterfield (UK).

Goal of this project is the complete development of a former industrial site into a nature and recreation area with the possibility of house-construction. In the past a gas work factory and several chemical factories were located at this site with a surface of 100 hectares. The total costs are estimated at 95 million euro. The financial aspects are realised by the British National Coalfields.

In the Joint Venture the three companies are equal, but SITA Remediation is as a specialist company responsible for the thermal desorption of 450.000 tons contaminated soil and sludge.

Already in 2004 DEME Environmental Contractors and SITA Remediation has made pilot purifications with very contaminated soil from this site. In 2005 seven (combinations of) companies were invited by the purchaser East Midlands Development Agency (emda) to make an offer (phase 1). After this bidding three companies were allowed to give a presentation including an explanation of the costs. Based on this information VSD Avenue has been chosen to work out the presented plan (phase 2). In this case engineering of the ideal plan of approach takes place in cooperation with the purchaser. After finishing this phase it has to be clear that this project can be developed as supposed (phase 3). Part of this phase is the building of a complete thermal desorption plant in 2010.

The expectation is that this project will be finished in a period of 4.5 years. Further information and photo's about this unique site can be found at www.theavenueproject.co.uk.
